Procedure volume information is crucial to develop an understanding of the market size, frequency of use of alternative / competitor procedures, specifics of the procedure in scope (e.g., length of stay, allocation to DRGs, age of treated patients).

There are two sources of market size information:
  • Marketing reports, based on interviews of sample hospitals with extrapolation to the whole country
  • Analysis, using administrative databases

Marketing reports have a serious limitation due to the need to extrapolate data from the small subset of hospitals to the entire country, which can be a biased approach. On the other hand, marketing reports could be very valuable when a procedure or device is scope is not yet recognized by the health care system, and there is no other way to understand the frequency of use for it.

Analysis using administrative databases is another common approach to understand the number of performed procedures / market size for a procedure. In this exercise, our team identifies relevant procedure codes from national coding systems (e.g., OPS in Germany) and collects procedure volume and other supportive information from national databases in each country. This page explains the process, availability of data, and limitations of this approach to assist business decision-making.

In which countries is analysis possible?
The analysis is only possible in the countries where administrative databases exist and available
  • Austria
Procedure volume data are available using procedure (MEL) codes. Only hospital segment
  • Belgium
Procedure volume data are available using INAMI nomenclature codes. Both hospital and ambulatory segments
  • England
Procedure volume data are available using OPCS codes. Both hospital and ambulatory segments. Additional insights are available
  • Finland
Procedure volume data are available using THL codes. Hospital segment only
  • France
Procedure volume data are available using CCAM nomenclature codes and volume for implants using LPPR codes. Only hospital segment. Break-down for public and private hospitals
  • Germany
Procedure volume data are available using OPS nomenclature codes. Only hospital segment
  • Netherlands
Procedure volume data are available using procedure codes (Zorgactiviteiten). Both hospital and ambulatory segments
  • Norway
Procedure volume data are available using NOMESCO codes. Hospital segment only
  • Sweden
Procedure volume data are available using KVÅ codes. Hospital segment only
  • Switzerland
Procedure volume data are available using modified CHOP codes. Hospital segment only

Eligible types of procedures
To be eligible for analysis, procedures should be adequately coded with a single procedure code. If multiple codes are required (e.g., using supplementary code for robotic assistance), analysis is not possible
Procedures described with individual codes
Each procedure should be coded with a single code. Analysis using a combination of multiple codes is not possible
Used in hospital segment
In most countries, databases cover the hospital segment only. Exceptions are Belgium, England, and the Netherlands
National aggregated data
MTRC has access only to the national data. Analysis by hospital or region is not possible
